Jekyll and Hyde in Films & TV: A List

Robert Louis Stevenson

Conceived by the morbid mind of author Robert Louis Stevenson, the vile and murderous Mr. Edward Hyde was given birth in the literary pages of the short horror-mystery classic Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886; Longmans, Green & Co.). The character of Mr. Hyde is unique and potent in that he forces us to examine the dark nature concealed deep within ourselves... and to ponder from what source is man urged to commit senseless violence? With Hyde's reign of terror pre-dating that of real-life serial killer Jack the Ripper (by a mere couple of years), it's no wonder the public has made him one of the most famous horror figures in history... especially in the cinema! Since 1908, numerous movies have adapted Stevenson's novella and continue to do so in rapid consistency. However, many of us who have read the book and watched enough of these films will have noticed, comparatively, that liberties have been taken in adding to the modest length of the original material. Indeed, most film adaptions borrow heavily from Thomas Russell Sullivan's famous 1897 stage play, which introduced a love interest for Dr. Henry Jekyll. Listed below, you will find films and television programs that feature the good doctor and/or his not so wholesome counterpart in varied interpretations. Enjoy!
